Since Dr. Labor was very young ophthalmology seemed to be the direction his professional life would take; in fact, his first word was the word “see”. Later, in the third grade, for his school science project, he chose as his topic “How The Eye Works”. Since he had no one in his immediate family involved in Medicine, he chose to become a Physician’s Assistant to ascertain whether or not Medicine would be the right career choice. This led to going to work for a highly respected ophthalmologist in New Orleans, Robert F Azar; this experience would solidify his desire to become an ophthalmologist. He witnessed and participated in changing lives in a way that truly resonated with him. Dr. Labor attended LSU School of Medicine and later completed Residency training at The Eye Foundation Hospital/ University of Alabama at Birmingham Combined Program in Ophthalmology where he served as Chief Resident. Subsequently, he did a LASIK mini-fellowship with Eric Rothchild in Boca Raton, Fl. Notably, while in Residency he became very ill as a consequence of congenital heart defect which led to open heart surgery. The experience taught him what it truly meant to be a patient and has informed the way in which he practices ophthalmology. Because of this event, he feels that he can more readily identify and empathize with patients who understandably have a significant degree of anxiety about having surgery on their most valued sense, their eyesight.
Dr Labor formed Eye Consultants of Texas at the end of 2002 and has taken all he learned to create a practice that espouses the philosophy he has when it comes to taking care of patients: “we must treat them as we’d treat our own family and be the best at what we’re doing whether simply taking a history, performing a test or performing any surgical procedure. We are adamant about making sure that we understand what the patient desires as an outcome; that we test and re-test if necessary to ensure that when we perform any treatment or surgery, we are very precise and our outcomes are consistent with our patients’ goals for that particular procedure. We also want to be sure that the patient expectations align with what current technology has the capability to provide”.
Dr. Labor holds certifications through the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) and is also Board Certified through the American Board of Eye Surgery (ABES) in both LASIK and Cataract surgery. He serves on the Boards of the Society for Excellence in Eyecare (SEE) where he served as past President and the American College of Eye Surgeons (ACES). He is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons (FACS) as well as the International College of Surgeons (FICS). In addition, he is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS) as well as a founding member of the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgeons (AECOS).
