Alex Onishi, MD was born and raised in the Bay Area. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where his interest in ophthalmology was initially sparked while conducting research on the lens and the eye. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, he attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago. His desire to help his patients improve their quality of life is why he ultimately decided to practice and dedicate his career to ophthalmology. He has now returned to California for his ophthalmology residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute (UCLA).
Dr. Onishi has authored more than a dozen peer-reviewed papers in leading ophthalmology journals including Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science as well as the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery. He has an interest in all areas of refractive surgery, although is particularly drawn to new technologies.
Patients can expect someone who will listen to them and their individual needs and treat them like family. They can therefore expect an eye surgeon who will put 100% of his effort into helping them achieve the best and most functional vision possible for them given their goals.
Outside of ophthalmology, Dr. Onishi’s hobbies include exercising (strength training and running), sports (particularly soccer), and hiking. He also enjoys playing video games, watching TV shows, and reading science fiction and fantasy books.
