Donald Benefield, MD, a native of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, founded Benefield Eye care in Gulfport 22 years ago after completing an internal medicine internship at Ochsner Medical Center and ophthalmology residency at Tulane University Medical Center. A board certified ophthalmologist, his strong belief in personalized eye heath care combined with his record as a stellar eye surgeon have built his reputation as one of the most trusted and respected practices on the Gulf Coast.
His clinical expertise includes diabetic eye disease, glaucoma/glaucoma surgery, laser and cataract surgery, blepharoplasty (eyelid lifts), eye straightening surgery and refractive surgery of the cornea.
“Dr. Don” as he is known by his patients and staff, has been performing refractive surgery since 1987. His 10 minute customized cataract procedure is painless and is free of cautery, sutures, patches or shots. The next day the eye is not red and the patient usually has good vision with little need for glasses so they can resume normal activities immediately. The procedure reduces or eliminates astigmatism.
Medical certifications include the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Benefield is past president of the State Ophthalmological Society.
Dr. Benefield, a clinical instructor of Ophthalmology, holds an extensive list of recognitions and awards for his achievements in the field of ophthalmology. These include, but are not limited to: The Lifelong Education Award and numerous Physicians’ Recognition Awards form the American Medical Association; Tulane University’s Outstanding Eye Alumnus of 2006.
