Fernando Faria Correia, MD, PhD, FEBOS-CR, PCEO received his medical degree from the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto in 2007, followed by an Ophthalmology residency training in Centro Hospitalar São João, Porto, Portugal (2009 – 2012). During the last year of residency, he completed a Corneal and Refractive Surgery fellowship led by Dr. Renato Ambrósio Jr. at Instituto de Olhos Renato Ambrósio and VisareRio (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). In 2013, Dr. Faria-Correia completed another fellowship in Cataract and Refractive Surgery led by Dr. George O. Waring IV at Medical University of South Carolina, Storm Eye Institute in Charleston, SC, USA.
Dr. Faria-Correia joined the Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Surgery Department of Hospital de Braga (Braga, Portugal) and Instituto CUF Porto (Porto, Portugal) in 2014. Since 2015, he also serves as coordinator of Ophthalmology (Residency in Surgery) at the Escola de Medicina da Universidade do Minho (Braga, Portugal).
Dr. Faria-Correia is also active in clinical research and integrates the activities of the Rio de Janeiro Corneal Tomography and Biomechanics Study Group. He has published more than 100 scientific works including peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and abstracts in scientific society meetings. Dr Faria-Correia is also active in teaching, serving as instructor in several courses and invited speaker in distinct international conferences. His clinical and scientific interests include new developments in anterior segment imaging, corneal ectasia diagnosis, laser vision correction and presbyopia correction intraocular lenses. In 2017, Dr Faria-Correia defended his doctoral thesis in Medicine entitled “Scheimpflug-based lens densitometry for preoperative assessment of age-related nuclear cataracts”. He also obtained the title of Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology – Specialist Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (FEBOS-CR), after passing the exam developed by the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) in 2018. During 2019, he also completed the Physician CEO course at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL, USA).
Dr. Faria-Correia is a reviewer for several international ophthalmology journals, including the Journal of Refractive Surgery and the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Since 2020, he is in the editorial board of the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today Europe and is a member of the International Council of the ISRS. Since 2021, he is the Editor-in-chief of the Oftalmologia – Revista da Sociedade Portuguesa de Oftalmologia.
