Arjan Hura, MD is a cataract, refractive, and anterior segment surgeon at the Maloney-Shamie-Hura Vision Institute in Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Hura is passionate about providing the highest possible medical and surgical vision care to his patients and is committed to the American Academy of Ophthalmology‘s mission of protecting sight and empowering lives. His research and clinical interests include working with the latest cutting-edge technology to constantly try to improve patient outcomes.
Prior to joining MSHVI, Dr. Hura completed his fellowship at the Cleveland Eye Clinic where he performed the full spectrum of vision correction including advanced lens laser cataract surgery, laser vision correction through LASIK, PRK and SMILE, implantable contact lenses (ICL), corneal cross-linking, and MIGS surgery.
During his residency at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Hura was involved in several award-winning research studies and investigator-initiated trials. He received a National Eye Institute grant to present at ARVO during his internship, and he presented at ASCRS during all three years of his ophthalmology residency and was awarded Best Paper of Session at ASCRS 2019 and 2022. Serving as chief surgical resident, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honor society, received a Graduate Medical Trainee Award of Excellence, the ASCRS 2021 Resident Excellence Award, was awarded the Alan and Karen Zalta Resident Research award, as well as the 2021 International Resident Leadership Award by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In medical school, Dr. Hura served as Co-Class President for four years and collaborated with the College of Medicine administration and his fellow classmates to implement widespread positive changes that involved the medical school curriculum, interactions with industry, and safety on campus. He was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, worked as a NIH-funded summer research fellow at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and was involved in the medical school’s Neuroscience Scholars Program. Upon graduation, he received the Alumni Award, an honor selected by his medical school class for conceiving and implementing programs for the benefit of the entire student body during medical school. Having earned a reputation as an outstanding leader during his journey through medical school, residency, and fellowship, Dr. Hura remains committed to patient advocacy and safety, mentoring students, and innovative clinical research.
Dr. Hura has personally performed over 4,000 vision correction surgeries utilizing the latest techniques in laser vision correction, ICLs, and advanced lens cataract surgery. He has received numerous awards for his research including 2 Best Papers of Session at ASCRS, the Alan & Karen Zalta Resident Research Award from the University of Cincinnati Department of Ophthalmology, and a grant from the National Eye Institute. Dr. Hura has been published in over 50 articles, abstracts and professional journals and has been an invited speaker, panelist, and moderator for ophthalmology’s preeminent national meetings. He was awarded the 2021 International Resident Leadership Award by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, a testament to his commitment to patient advocacy, dedication to mentoring ophthalmology students, and his passion for lifelong learning.
