John W. Josephson, MD is the owner and founder of Eye Specialists and Surgeons of Northern Virginia. He is a nationally recognized board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained Cornea and Refractive Surgeon. Dr. Josephson is dedicated to excellence in vision corrective surgery and evidence-based ophthalmology. His mission is that every patient receives the highest quality of care coupled with cutting-edge technology to provide a comprehensive and personalized approach.

As a leader in refractive surgery, Dr. Josephson has performed over 50,000 surgeries and in 2023 opened Virginia’s first accredited Ophthalmologic Office-Based Surgical Center. He has received numerous accolades including Washingtonian Top Doctor and Northern Virginia Magazine Top Doctor for several years. Dr. Josephson has been asked to be a key opinion speaker for many industry leaders including leading the movement of Office-Based Surgery and Light adjustable lenses. Most recently he was nominated as one of the Best Lasik Surgeons in America by his peers. In efforts to contribute to advancements in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Josephson serves as an oral board examiner with the American Association of Ophthalmologic Surgeons.

Before coming to Northern Virginia, Dr. Josephson completed an Advanced Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Fellowship at the University of California San Diego with a unique additional four-month high-volume LASER Fellowship at the Gordon Weiss & Schanzlin Laser Vision Center. He completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Academic Center, Washington DC. His medical training was completed at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ with a Distinction in Research. During his medical training, he completed a Clinical Research Training Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, where he published many papers and presented his work at several conferences. He completed his undergraduate degree in cell biology and neuroscience at Rutgers University with High Honors and was one of the few Henry Rutgers Research Scholars.

Dr. Josephson’s most important distinction is his dedication to his community and indigent populations abroad. His practice supports local organizations like the Lamb Center and Hope Foundation on an annual basis. He has served in medical missions to Kenya, Bolivia, Ethiopia, and Dominican Republic. In 2023 his team performed dozens of highly complicated surgeries in Bolivia and was awarded the Humanitarian Award by the public hospital in Santa Cruz. Dr. Josephson’s passion for mentoring also allows him to dedicate time to instructing residents from Georgetown University during surgical cases.
