Rishi Kumar, MD is a board-certified and fellowship-trained ophthalmologist and is the director of Cataract and Glaucoma Surgery at Kumar Eye. Dr. Rishi joined Kumar in 2007 and is currently the CEO of the practice.
After completing a degree in pre-medicine and dramatic literature at Columbia University in the City of New York, Dr. Rishi obtained his degree in medicine at George Washington University in Washington D.C. He then completed his internship in medicine at George Washington University Hospital. Following this, Dr. Rishi completed a research fellowship at the Indiana University Glaucoma Research and Diagnostic Center with Dr. Alon Harris. Residency in ophthalmology was then completed at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Rishi completed his surgical fellowship training in advanced cataract and glaucoma with the late, Dr. Alan Crandall, one of the world’s leading eye surgeons at John A. Moran Eye Center in Utah.
Dr. Rishi is a pioneer in cataract and glaucoma surgery. He was the first surgeon in Louisville in Kentucky to perform gonioscopy-assisted trans-luminal trabeculotomy in a family of kids to successfully control their congenital glaucoma. He also performed the first micropulse trans-scleral cyclophotocoagulation procedure in Kentucky. He was the first to implant the Dextenza implant with cataract surgery in Kentucky. Currently, his special interests include combined cataract and glaucoma surgery, including trabeculectomy and minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) such as the iStent W implant system and the Omni visco-canalostomy surgeries.
He has co-authored several peer-reviewed articles and books in glaucoma diagnostics and has been a mentor to medical students in glaucoma research. Dr. Rishi is a past president of the Louisville Academy of Ophthalmology and currently is on the Board of the Greater Louisville Medical Society and is the Chair of the Advocacy Committee. He also served on the Board for the Shively Area Ministry for several years.
Dr. Rishi and his wife, Sunday, enjoy spending time with their two children, and english bulldog. He also enjoys playing golf, rowing, BBQ in the backyard and reading a good novel when on vacation.
