Marc Malouf, MD, is a third-generation, board-certified ophthalmologist at Whitten Laser Eye, who has taken on some of the area’s toughest cases and performed thousands of cataract and glaucoma surgeries. In addition to his expertise in complex, high-risk cataract surgery, he has a special interest in laser-assisted cataract surgery, refractive surgery, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. Dr. Malouf’s interest in eye care started at an early age as he worked in his grandfather’s and father’s ophthalmology clinics. Watching his family members care for patients and helping them regain sight was a strong motivating factor for Dr. Malouf to enter the Ophthalmology field.
Eye surgery is a very complex field with many different options and technologies. This can often be very confusing and overwhelming for patients. With considerable expertise in utilizing a wide range of laser and intra-ocular lens technologies, Dr. Malouf incorporates all the newest technologies to achieve the best vision possible for his patients. He takes time to listen to his patient’s vision needs and customizes a vision plan for every patient. However, being good at surgery is only part of Dr. Malouf’s philosophy. He takes time to get to know his patients, and is always available for them should they need him. This type of personal connection with his patients is what truly motivates Dr. Malouf.
Refractive surgery is a field like none other. In this constantly evolving field, we have incredible technologies that allow us to make dramatic improvements in peoples lives. The happiness I see in patients the first time they see without glasses, makes me enjoying coming to work each day.
After receiving his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, Dr. Marc Malouf earned his MD from George Washington University, followed by an internship in general surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, VA. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he gained extensive experience in traumatic eye injuries, glaucoma, cataract surgeries, and was involved in multiple research projects and medical journal publications. He has also served as a principle investigator on a clinical trial working to develop a new treatment for dry eyes. Dr. Malouf is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Maryland State Medical Society, Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and the Virginia State Medical Society.
When not working, Dr. Malouf enjoys traveling to both domestic and international destinations, especially where he can experience new cultures and cuisines. If he could not be an eye surgeon, Dr. Malouf would want to be a travel writer with the goal of visiting every country.
