Andres Parra, MD specializes in refractive laser cataract surgery, LASIK/PRK, and refractive lens exchange, as well as the latest advancements in MIGS (micro-invasive glaucoma surgery) and comprehensive eye care. He is passionate about helping his patients achieve the best possible vision to suit their individual needs and lifestyles using cutting-edge technology as a cataract and refractive surgeon at Eye Associates of South Texas in San Antonio. Dr. Parra has performed thousands of vision correction surgeries and his patients come from all walks of life and include industry producers, professional athletes, artists and photographers, entrepreneurs, professors, fellow doctors and nurses, and patients traveling from abroad, among others. Dr. Parra is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Born in Bogota, Colombia, and raised in Texas, Dr. Parra found his calling in medicine at a young age serving as an interpreter for his mother at doctors’ appointments, where he recognized the great impact an empathic doctor can make in a patient’s life. He went on to graduate from Washington University in St. Louis with B.A. in Biological Psychology before obtaining his Medical Degree at Baylor College of Medicine, where he developed his passion for Ophthalmology. He then completed his Ophthalmology Residency and was a Chief Resident at the world-renowned UCLA Stein Eye Institute, consistently regarded as one of the Top 5 Ophthalmology Hospitals and training programs in the country by U.S News & World Report. Through his background and experiences, Dr. Parra has cultivated a focus on putting his patients first and using modern technology to cater to their individualized needs.
Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr. Parra has maintained a commitment to education, leadership, and service. He was selected as a full-tuition Annika Rodriguez Scholar at Washington University for his commitment to academic excellence, exceptional leadership, and outstanding service to the community. During his time at Baylor College of Medicine, he coordinated multiple vision fairs and screenings for children, indigent populations, and refugees. He has multiple research publications in esteemed peer-reviewed journals including The Ocular Surface and has presented at national Ophthalmology conferences. After completing his training, Dr. Parra also served as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Houston College of Medicine and Optometry, where he shared his knowledge and expertise with students and other doctors in the community.
As a surgeon, patients can expect Dr. Parra to be a great listener with extremely high standards and meticulous attention to detail. On a personal level, Dr. Parra is easygoing, approachable, and takes interest in people’s unique journey through life. He is proud to call himself both Texan and Colombian and he enjoys traveling and spending time outdoors with his wife and their daughter, usually with a camera in hand.
