Dr. Caleb Shumway, MD, is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in advanced cataract and refractive surgery, with a focus on cutting-edge surgical techniques and innovative intraocular lens (IOL) technologies. A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Shumway earned his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine, where he also participated in the PRIME-LC program, training to provide culturally sensitive care to underserved populations. His clinical expertise was honed during his residency in New York City, where he served as chief resident, further cultivating his leadership and surgical skills.
Dr. Shumway completed an elite fellowship in advanced cataract and refractive surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Weinstock and Dr. Neel Desai at the Eye Institute of West Florida. This training included comprehensive experience in laser-assisted cataract surgery, bimanual microincisional cataract surgery, and advanced IOL platforms, including multifocal, extended depth of focus (EDOF), bifocal segmented, and the Light Adjustable Lens. He developed expertise in the use of femtosecond laser technology and emerging techniques designed to optimize refractive outcomes.
Dr. Shumway’s research contributions include groundbreaking work on femtosecond laser-assisted corneal transplants, evaluation of effective lens position using optical coherence tomography (OCT), and novel biometry approaches for improving surgical accuracy. He has also conducted comparative analyses of IOL platforms, focusing on the refractive outcomes and patient satisfaction with EDOF, multifocal, and segmented lenses. His findings have been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Ophthalmology, Cornea, and the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (JCRS), and he has presented his research at national and international ophthalmology conferences.
An advocate for innovation in cataract and refractive surgery, Dr. Shumway is committed to advancing safety and precision through the use of the smallest possible instrumentation and highly tailored surgical planning. His bimanual microincisional cataract surgery technique exemplifies his dedication to minimally invasive methods that enhance surgical outcomes while reducing recovery times.
Dr. Shumway’s work reflects his passion for improving both functional and visual outcomes for patients, and his collaboration with peers in ophthalmology ensures the dissemination of best practices in surgical care. When not in the operating room, Dr. Shumway enjoys jogging, surfing, and spending time with his wife and children.
