Devin B. Tran, MD was born and raised in a small town in Louisiana as a product of the Vietnam War through the union of a first-generation, Southern Vietnamese immigrant and an American woman. He and his 7 siblings’ upbringing can be summed up in two words, “one bathroom.” His humble roots taught him compassion and appreciation for his fellow man, planting the seed for a love of medicine. A vocation in Ophthalmic surgery has been the culmination of his childhood obsession for dexterous activities like guitar, inclination for math and physics, love of all things DIY, and admiration for the rise and fall of his relentless, entrepreneurial father’s nine small business ventures.
In addition to excellent clinical knowledge and surgical skills, Dr. Tran’s background in education as a high school tutor, college tutor, chief resident, and professor of Ophthalmic Surgery at LSU has fostered a love for teaching patients and residents. He is most notably regarded by his pupils for his perspicacious explanations, breaking down complex topics into more easily understood concepts. Dr. Tran believes that curiosity breeds excellence and that diversifying one’s skills can synergistically enhance the unexpected. Practicing in a largely underserved area with only two other cornea specialists, Dr. Tran strives to bring the best level of care to his community by dedicating his life to mastering all things cornea. He believes that refractive surgery is one of several pillars of visual rehabilitation. Dr. Tran offers several corneal procedures (LASIK, PRK, PTK, SK, CAIRS, LRI, DMEK, DSEK, DALK, PKP, MICE) and anterior segment procedures (ICL, Cataract, IOL Exchange, Secondary IOL Implant, Pupillary Cerclage, Iris Repair, Conjunctivoplasty, etc).
Dr. Tran’s educational background includes graduating as valedictorian of a public high school and receiving a University Medal (4.0 GPA) from Louisiana State University. He discovered his love for Ophthalmology in medical school at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans and excelled in residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he served as Chief Resident. He completed a Cornea Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and moved back to rejoin his family in Baton Rouge, LA. He is currently in private practice with a part-time professorship in Ophthalmic Surgery at LSUHSC. Outside of work, Dr. Tran spends the vast majority of his free time with his family including his loving wife and daughter.
