Avi Wallerstein, MD, FRCSC is a board-certified ophthalmologist in Canada. He is a fellowship trained specialist in corneal surgery with further a subspecialty in corneal laser refractive surgery. His 20-year clinical and surgical practice has been solely dedicated to laser vision correction (LVC). His expertise in LASIK and PRK includes over 65,000 procedures. His practice encompasses topography guided treatments for irregular corneas, excimer regularization combining collagen cross linking (CXL) for Keratoconus, and corneal laser presbyopia treatments.
Dr. Wallerstein is the co-founder and the co-National Medical Director of the LASIK MD clinics in Canada, with over 50 surgeons and 35 centers. He establishes medical protocols, surgical manuals, quality control, and risk management for the largest LVC provider in Canada. As the Executive Vice President of Vision Group Canada, he is a managing partner of the parent company of several LVC, IOL, and clinical ophthalmology clinics, including LASIK MD, and TLC Canada.
An Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, in the department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences McGill University, he is the director of refractive surgery teaching and heads the Refractive Surgery Research Unit (RSRU). He also heads the LASIK MD research and development team utilizing the largest electronic refractive surgery databases with 75,000 eyes added yearly. Dr. Wallerstein is currently working on advanced LVC nomogram improvements, the role of higher order aberrations in visual outcomes, and early keratoconus and ectasia diagnosis.
Dr. Wallerstein’s interests have led him to an instrumental role in the development of a unique proprietary non-commercial CRM/EMR specialized for LVC and IOL surgery, and an LVC treatment nomogram software.
